We’ve all been fed a big fat lie: that there’s a such thing as a natural born leader.
IDK who started that myth, but that’s exactly what it is: A MYTH!
Being an effective manager and leader isn’t something you’re inherently born with. Sure, you may have some natural qualities that help you lead, but the hard skills that make someone an effective leader have to be learned, practiced, and refined.
And more than just being wrong, this whole “leaders are born” nonsense is actually harmful.
The Idea Of A ‘Born Leader’ is Actually Problematic
If you step into a leadership role assuming you’ll just figure it out because “hey, we’re all born leaders,” it can derail your business and your team’s progress.
It can also crush your confidence, leaving you thinking:
“Maybe I just don’t have what it takes “
“I guess I’m not cut out for this”
Let me stop you right there.
You do have what it takes.
You are cut out for this.
But like anything worth doing, leadership takes work. It’s about channeling your natural qualities into real skills your team needs.
And I’m not alone in saying this. There are tons of studies and research to back this up.
On this episode of On The Up & Up:
We’re debunking the “born leader” myth once and for all. We’ll dive into what some of the world’s most respected leaders have to say about it, and we’ll clear up the difference between leadership and management – because even though we use them pretty interchangeably around here, knowing the difference matters.
