Paradigm X Easy Scaling

How Strategic HR helped Easy Scaling founder Jordan Schanda King build a company culture that thrives so she can truly embrace the ease of scaling her biz.

For Jordan Schanda King, Founder and CEO of Easy Scaling, ease and flow are top priorities when she helps her clients grow and scale their businesses. When it came to taking her own business to the next level though, this meant building an HR policy and creating an employee structure for her business and that – wasn’t so easy.

Knowing that hiring employees and building a strong company culture were crucial to the next phase of success for Easy Scaling, Jordan hired Paradigm for the Set to Scale Intensive – and boy did she scale.

By The Numbers..

Jordan knew that she needed to do something to ensure her team structure was on the up and up, but employees felt like a really big step and HR, quite honestly, felt boring. So diving into working with Paradigm wasn’t exactly her first instinct.

Contractors were a simple solution that allowed Jordan to grow her business without taking on more responsibility than she was ready for.

“Once we decided to grow we grew quickly and seemingly without an end in sight. The sheer amount of hours that I needed some of my team members to be working to fulfill client needs was getting into a wonky territory where I knew I was toeing the line compliance-wise. I wanted to do what was best for my clients but I also wanted to make sure my team was taken care of.”

The Early Days

When Jordan started Easy Scaling, she put herself on a fast track to success. Growing from idea to five-figure months, 0 to 3 clients, and just herself to leading a talented team of 13 in its first few months, the sky was truly the limit for Easy Scaling – did we mention Jordan did it all while pregnant?

After welcoming baby number 2 in April and enjoying a brief maternity leave, Jordan was back. Ready to put the pedal to the metal and take Easy Scaling to the next level.

Grew from 0 to 4 employees in 4 different states

Streamlined total contractor count from 16 to 14

Revenue grew 237% from June to September 2022

Profit grew 319% from June to September 2022

A Hard Leap for Easy Scaling

Kira La Forgia founded Paradigm to bridge the gap between corporate HR policies and the modern needs of online entrepreneurs.

One thing we really enjoy about working with Jordan and Easy Scaling is that it allows us to stretch the nature of HR to encapsulate the overall experience of the team, while centering our priority to support the CEO.

Our goal is always to give our clients the tools to scale up and down their team operations based on company needs, and Easy Scaling's rapid growth has proven to be a really challenging a fun collaboration. Our ideal client are those that take an active interest in the team experience and it's been cool to see Jordan step into that type of leadership for her own company.

Paradigm Who...?

But, the law is the law, and once Jordan realized she needed employees, it didn’t matter what she was ready for. She had to take the next step.

“I felt good about my team structure and how my offers worked but I needed a lot of people to give my clients the level of support that we were promising. The more team members we brought on the more control I needed to have over people’s working hours and response times, and that is when things started crossing over into employee territory. I needed to be able to enforce certain standards so that everybody could do their job and that just wasn’t something I could do with a full contractor team.”

It took a long time for Jordan to actually make the leap into hiring employees and working with Paradigm.

“I think it took me six months from our first call to actually go ahead and book the Paradigm Solution. I wanted to stay compliant but I also wanted to avoid jumping into employees for as long as possible. So it took a long time for me to really feel ready, but once I knew it was what I had to do it was pretty easy for me to dive in and make the most of the experience.”

Options on options on options

Jordan didn’t spend those six months just sitting around and waiting to need employees. She researched, asked her network questions, and explored the other options available to her aside from the The Paradigm Solution.

From there, it was simply a matter of budget and timing – Jordan was in the middle of growing a human after all – before the Paradigm Solution was booked and Easy Scaling was off to the races.

“I had a few connections who either offered HR consulting or knew of people who did, so I definitely explored other options before deciding to work with Paradigm, but I knew that employees were just a piece of the puzzle. I needed stability and security and to build a team that was dedicated to easy scaling and to each other, and I felt like the Paradigm Solution was going to set me up for success in that area as well.”

“I was expecting the Intensive to be boring HR like, how do we onboard people? What does the handbook look like? What laws do I have to follow? But it was so much more expansive than that.”

The Unexpected Joy of Org Charts

Organized and exceptional at delegating, Jordan was surprised to discover how much fun she had building out her own organizational structure, culture, and future planning.

“Looking at the bigger picture of the company and how my capacity for work influences our offer structure, how the different departments interact with and report to each other, and truly understanding why we are implementing the policies and procedures that we have was a really legitimizing thing for me as a CEO. When you’re a freelancer or solopreneur, you get to make these decisions on the fly and the only person they really impact is you, but once you start to take yourself seriously as a business owner and look at your work as building a company, everything means so much more and that is super rewarding.”

Staying Connected

“I knew that there was support involved after the Paradigm Solution, but I didn’t really think too much of it until it was actually happening. But we’re dealing with humans, and humans need support. Having a space where I could ask questions and strategize once we laid the foundation was so valuable to help me ensure I was making the most of the investment and taking strategic action with the decisions we made during the intensive.”

For Jordan, the organizational culture and planning weren’t the only surprises to come out of the Paradigm Solution.

"Kira hosted a workshop inside of our Collective Membership and it was incredible. She shared so much incredible value not only on how to hire but also best practices, when to hire an employee vs. contractor, how to look for the best person for your team as well as company culture! Kira has great presentation skills and her high energy keeps everyone engaged and excited about the topic!"

Armed with a plan that she can use to scale as quickly as she wants – and a team to support her every step of the way, Jordan grew from wary of HR to a walking billboard of the success you can find if you build a team you care about, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.

“Once we decided to scale, we scaled really quickly and, from the client’s perspective, everything we tried worked. Every offer we launched filled up and we basically quadrupled our client load in just a few months. But after taking the time to build up my team and create a culture that really supported them, it became clear to me which offers, clients, and relationships weren’t serving us, and taking that feedback into consideration inspired me to pull back and scale down until we found a better groove.”

Keeping the Future Easy

For Jordan, the organizational culture and planning weren’t the only surprises to come out of the Paradigm Solution.

“I was primarily a Tech VA. I loved working with different clients and solving problems, but I hated having to go out and find new clients.”

Employee Spotlight

After joining the Easy Scaling team as a contractor in the Fall of 2021, Andrea began to imagine a future where she didn’t have to go out and find new clients.

From Teaching to Tech VA - Andrea's Employee to Entrepreneur (& Back to Employee!) Story

“The business was growing very quickly and we started to increase my hours over time to the point where I was eventually able to let go of my other clients and only work with Jordan as a contractor.”

“My role as a contractor was very silo’d. There were limitations in communication and how we project managed and, even though things worked out at the time, stepping into a new version of the role as an employee definitely opened up a new way for me to engage with clients and the rest of our team.”

But there were limitations to the contracted role, so when Jordan began to work with Paradigm and explore bringing on employees, it wasn’t long before Andrea began to make the transition.

Now that the Easy Scaling team has a healthy mix of contractors and employees, Andrea has stepped up into the role of Senior Client Relations Manager, helping clients and team members stay in touch, on task, and on time to get clients the best results possible.

“Being able to work for a company like Easy Scaling gave me the best of both worlds. I had the flexibility I needed to be a present parent for my daughter, but the responsibility and stability that I wanted in a work environment. Being an employee has helped me feel like a permanent member of this team and I can easily imagine my future with Easy Scaling.”

Before diving into the world of online entrepreneurship, Andrea spent ten years in the classroom as a teacher. But after leaving school to stay home with her daughter, running her own business presented a new set of challenges.
